Keilor Council Launches Free Fitness Programs for 1,200+ Seniors
Keilor residents aged 60 and over gain access to no-cost group exercise sessions run by the local council at multiple sites.
How we reported this
Keilor Council will roll out free senior fitness classes across three venues starting 15 July 2026, with sessions open to any resident aged 60 or older who registers in advance.
These programs arrive as more households in Keilor report concerns about mobility and balance after the winter months. Council records show a 22 percent rise in calls to community health services from seniors between January and May this year, prompting the expansion of existing walking and strength classes without added fees.
Venues and Schedules
Classes will meet at Green Gully Reserve on Taylors Road every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. for low-impact circuit training led by council trainers. A second group gathers at the Keilor Community Centre on Old Calder Highway each Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. for chair-based yoga and balance work. A third option runs Friday mornings along the shared path beside the Maribyrnong River in Keilor Downs, where participants cover a measured 2-kilometre loop with optional rest stops at the Avondale Heights footbridge.
Council data from the 2025 calendar year recorded 612 unique seniors attending at least one session, with average attendance per class reaching 28 people. The new timetable adds 14 extra weekly spots at no charge, funded through the existing rates budget rather than new levies. Participants need only bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes; mats and resistance bands are supplied on site.
How to Join
Registration opens online through the Keilor Council website on 8 July or in person at the customer service desk at the municipal offices on Sunshine Avenue. Spots fill on a first-come basis, though waitlists operate for popular time slots. Those who prefer to speak with staff can call 9243 8888 during business hours. Attendees are advised to check with their own doctor before beginning any new routine, as the council does not provide individual medical clearance.
