Mitcham Council Launches Free Senior Fitness Programs Across Parks, Halls
Older residents can now access no-cost group exercise classes at multiple venues, as the council doubles down on preventive health spending.
How we reported this

Mitcham Council has expanded its free senior fitness program to six venues across the suburb, effective this month, removing the last financial barrier for residents over 60 who want structured group exercise. The move adds two new locations, Mitcham Reserve on Princes Road and the Ravensworth Road Community Hall, to the four sites already running sessions under the Active Ageing Initiative launched in February 2025.
The timing matters. Winters that push people indoors, combined with the kind of prolonged heat stress many communities saw through June, tend to disrupt exercise routines for older adults more severely than for any other age group. Physiotherapists and exercise physiologists consistently flag the July-August window as the period when deconditioning accelerates fastest among seniors. Getting people back into a regular movement habit before spring is exactly the logic behind mid-year program expansions like this one.
What's on offer and where
The program runs Monday through Friday, with sessions staggered between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. to avoid the coldest part of winter mornings. Mitcham Reserve hosts a chair-based yoga class at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, led by instructors certified through Fitness Australia's older-adult specialist pathway. The Ravensworth Road Community Hall runs balance and strength circuits on Mondays and Wednesdays, targeting the muscle groups most associated with fall prevention in adults over 65. The Mitcham Community Centre on Whitehorse Road, one of the original four sites, continues its popular walking group, which departs at 8:30 a.m. daily and covers a 3.2-kilometre loop through Yarrbat Park.
Participation is completely free. Residents need only register through Council's Active Ageing Initiative portal or by calling the Mitcham Civic Centre directly on Princes Road. There is no means-testing and no waiting list for most sessions, though the Ravensworth Road hall classes are currently capped at 18 participants per session due to floor space. A second Wednesday timeslot is being considered if demand holds through July.
Why the numbers back this approach
The evidence for group exercise over solo activity in older adults is robust. Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that adults over 65 who participate in supervised group exercise at least twice weekly are 34 per cent less likely to experience a serious fall-related injury over a 12-month period compared with those exercising alone or not at all. Falls cost health systems enormously, the Royal College of Physicians estimated the annual inpatient cost of fall-related hip fractures in England alone at £2 billion as recently as 2024, and councils that invest in prevention programs typically see downstream savings on local social care budgets within three to four years.
Mitcham Council allocated $187,000 to the Active Ageing Initiative in its 2025-26 budget, up from $104,000 the prior year. That figure now covers instructor fees, equipment including resistance bands and yoga mats, and the administration of the registration system. Officials have indicated a further review in October 2026 will determine whether to extend the program through summer or restructure it around outdoor-only venues once the cooler months pass.
For residents who want to join but have concerns about existing injuries or chronic conditions, arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular conditions, the council strongly advises a conversation with a GP or local exercise physiologist before attending the first session. The Mitcham Health Hub on Whitehorse Road has several accredited exercise physiologists on staff and bulk-bills eligible patients under Medicare. Starting a new program with at least one professional check-in is, frankly, the smartest move any older adult can make before stepping onto that mat for the first time.
Registration opens for the new Mitcham Reserve and Ravensworth Road sessions on Monday 7 July. The Mitcham Civic Centre is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
