Blue-light wavelengths emitted by smartphone and tablet screens suppress melatonin production by up to 23 percent, according to research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 2023. That's not a minor disruption. Melatonin is the hormone that signals to your brain it's time to shut down, and even modest suppression pushes the body's sleep-onset window back by 90 minutes or more in habitual evening users.
