Newport Residents Discover 12 Free Outdoor Fitness Circuits for Summer
Newport residents are turning to no-cost park installations for daily workouts as summer routines settle in.
How we reported this
Newport's parks department installed new pull-up bars and resistance stations at two waterfront sites last month, giving residents immediate access to equipment previously limited to paid gyms.
Outdoor fitness has gained traction locally because household budgets face pressure from rising utility costs and many indoor facilities require annual memberships that exceed $400. City records show permit applications for group exercise classes in public spaces rose 22 percent between January and June this year.
Two standout locations
The Ocean View Park circuit on Seaview Drive features eight stations spaced along a 1.2-kilometre loop, including dip bars, leg-press platforms and balance beams added in 2024. A second option sits at Riverside Green on Harbour Road, where a fenced area holds rowing machines, kettlebell zones and a 400-metre marked running track maintained by the Newport Recreation Trust.
Both sites open at dawn and remain lit until 10 pm through the summer schedule approved by council in May. Volunteers from the Newport Wellness Network run free Saturday morning circuit sessions at Riverside Green that start at 8 am and last 45 minutes.
Usage data and next steps
Parks department counters recorded 8,400 visits to the Ocean View stations during the first quarter of 2026, while Riverside Green logged 6,100. Equipment receives weekly safety checks on Tuesdays, and any damaged parts are replaced within 48 hours under the current maintenance contract.
Residents can download the Newport Parks app to view real-time equipment availability and report issues. Beginners are advised to visit mid-morning on weekdays when foot traffic is lighter and to bring a water bottle, since fountains operate only from May through September.
