Oakleigh Residents Transform Daily Walks Into Mindfulness Without Extra Time
Oakleigh residents are learning to fold brief pauses and breath awareness into everyday routes without adding extra time to their schedules.
How we reported this
The Oakleigh Community Wellness Program opened its first guided walking meditation sessions on July 8 along Atherton Road, with 45 residents signing up for the initial Tuesday morning group.
Interest has risen this year as locals look for low-cost ways to ease stress without signing up for studio classes or carving out separate blocks of time. Walking meditation fits into existing commutes or errands, turning movement already on the calendar into a focused practice.
Routes through Oakleigh
Groups meet at the entrance to Oakleigh Recreation Reserve on Drummond Street before moving onto the footpath that runs beside the railway line toward Eaton Street. Another option starts at the Oakleigh Library on Atherton Road and loops through the small park at the corner of Portman Street, where benches allow short standing pauses. Both paths stay under 2 kilometres and take roughly 25 minutes at a slow pace.
The program charges $12 per session, with the first three meetings free for new participants. A 2025 internal count by the Oakleigh Community Wellness Program showed that 68 percent of people who attended at least four sessions reported better sleep after two weeks.
Simple steps to begin
Start by matching each inhale to two or three steps and each exhale to the next two or three. When the mind drifts to a phone notification or a work list, bring attention back to the feel of the foot meeting the pavement. At the halfway point on either route, stop for 30 seconds, notice three sounds, then resume walking. No special clothing or equipment is required beyond comfortable shoes already used for daily movement.
Residents can join the next session by registering at the Oakleigh Library desk before 9 a.m. on Tuesdays or by checking the notice board outside the recreation reserve. Those who prefer to practice alone can follow the same route markers posted on the library website.
