Oakleigh Swimmers Find Perfect Lap Pools as Winter Ends
Oakleigh residents are turning to local outdoor facilities for steady lap sessions as winter gives way to clearer days.
How we reported this

Oakleigh's outdoor pools and rock pools drew steady crowds this week for lap swimming, with the Oakleigh Aquatic Centre on Station Street logging more than 400 daily entries since the start of July.
Wellness routines in the suburb have shifted toward consistent outdoor movement after months of indoor classes, and council data shows a 12 percent rise in park-based fitness bookings compared with the same period last year. The change aligns with longer daylight hours and milder mornings that make early swims practical for shift workers and parents.
Two venues drawing regular lap swimmers
The Oakleigh Aquatic Centre on Station Street offers a 50-metre outdoor lane pool kept at 26 degrees, with sessions running from 6am to 8pm on weekdays. A short drive east, the Huntingdale Rock Pools at the end of Edward Street provide natural tidal lanes marked by buoys, where swimmers complete 500-metre loops at low tide without entry fees.
Both sites sit within the Oakleigh wellness network that includes the monthly Park Run at Warrawee Park and the council-run Active Oakleigh program, which supplies free lane ropes and timing boards on request.
Numbers behind the trend
Entry at the Aquatic Centre costs $7.50 for adults and $5 for concession holders, while the rock pools remain free. A May 2026 council survey recorded 1,850 lap-swim visits across these two locations in a single week, up from 1,640 the previous month. Instructors from the Active Oakleigh program now run technique clinics at the pool every Tuesday evening at 7pm.
Swimmers planning to visit can check tide tables for the rock pools on the council website or reserve a lane at the Aquatic Centre through its online booking system before arriving. Those new to lap swimming are advised to start with the shorter 25-metre lanes at the pool before attempting the open-water distance at Huntingdale.
