Prahran Council Expands Free Senior Fitness Programs at Community Hubs
From yoga at Grattan Gardens to aqua aerobics at Prahran Aquatic Centre, council-funded classes are helping older residents get active-free of charge.
How we reported this

Prahran’s local council has unveiled an expanded line-up of free senior fitness classes across its community centres this winter, making it easier than ever for older residents to stay active without stretching their budgets.
The rollout comes as the cost of living continues to bite for many on fixed incomes, and community health experts warn that isolation and inactivity remain serious risks for seniors. In a neighbourhood famous for its vibrant parks and wellness scene, demand has surged for exercise opportunities that are accessible, social, and low-cost. The council’s renewed focus on senior fitness responds directly to feedback from local over-60s and advocacy groups, according to council staff overseeing the programs.
Yoga Mats and Aqua Weights on Greville and High Streets
Free classes are being offered at several key venues. The Grattan Gardens Community Centre, tucked just off Greville Street, hosts gentle yoga and tai chi sessions every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Meanwhile, the Prahran Aquatic Centre has opened up its warm-water pool to senior-only aqua aerobics on Mondays at 11:15am, coordinated by trainers with specialist accreditation in older adult exercise. Bookings are not required-residents simply show proof of address at the door.
Elsewhere, at T.H. King Oval on High Street, a social walking group has formed, meeting Wednesdays for two laps of the oval followed by coffee at a nearby cafe. The group, coordinated through the council’s Active Living Prahran initiative, recently hit record participation with 34 attendees last week, ages ranging from 61 to 85. Volunteers help newcomers navigate the route and introduce friendly faces to first-timers, building connections along with cardiovascular health.
Demand Rising as Local Numbers Climb
Council officials say there has been a 28% increase in attendance at senior exercise events since the beginning of 2026. According to program coordinator Elise Burton, more than 480 unique participants signed up for at least one session during the April-June quarter. This comes as local data from South Yarra Community Health shows that only 37% of people aged over 65 in the surrounding precinct currently meet recommended physical activity guidelines-an improvement from three years ago, but still under half. Importantly, all classes remain free, a move council says is non-negotiable to encourage broad participation regardless of income.
The expansion arrives at a time when budget pressures have forced some private gyms in the block around Chapel Street and Commercial Road to raise prices for over-60s memberships, which now average $19 to $25 per week. For many, the community-run classes offer an accessible-and social-alternative, with no cost barrier.
How to Join, and What’s Next
Prahran locals keen to get involved can check updated schedules on the Stonnington City Council’s website or drop by Grattan Gardens in person for a printed timetable. Council officers expect the most popular classes-yoga and aqua aerobics-to continue through spring, with new programs such as line dancing and low-impact circuit training slated for September. Organisers recommend wearing comfortable clothing and arriving early during peak periods, particularly for aquatic sessions.
Health experts continue to remind residents that while group fitness is beneficial, individual health concerns should be discussed with local GPs, such as those at the Prahran Market Clinic. In the meantime, the council’s free programs remain a feature of daily life in Prahran’s parks and pools-offering proof that staying active doesn’t need to come with a price tag.
