Preston's Outdoor Pools and Rock Pools Offer Prime Lap Swimming Options
Residents are heading to local outdoor spots for structured lap sessions amid the city's active wellness scene.
How we reported this
Preston City Council opened the refurbished lap lanes at the Miller Park outdoor pool on West Cliff last month, drawing daily crowds for 25-metre swims.
Interest in outdoor swimming has grown this summer because local wellness programmes now link regular water exercise to better hormone balance and steadier metabolism, prompting more people to swap indoor gyms for open-air options.
The pool sits inside Miller Park and charges £3.80 for a 45-minute adult session, while the rock pools along the Ribble Way footpath near Broadgate provide free tidal lanes measuring up to 30 metres at low tide.
Two key locations for repeat visits
Fulwood residents use the Miller Park site most weekday mornings before 9am, when lane ropes stay in place and the water temperature averages 18 degrees. Swimmers at the Broadgate rock pools time their visits to the two-hour window after low tide listed on the Ribble Estuary tide tables, avoiding the stronger currents that arrive later.
Both spots sit within a short bus ride of the city centre and connect to the council's free wellness walking routes that start from the same parks.
Practical steps before heading out
Entry data released by the council on 1 July showed 1,450 lap-swim visits at Miller Park in the first three weeks of June. The same report recorded an average session length of 32 minutes. Visitors should bring a towel and check the daily tide app before driving to Broadgate, as parking on the nearby side streets fills by 10am on weekends.
Those new to the sites can join the weekly Tuesday evening group organised by Preston Active Communities at Miller Park, which supplies lane etiquette guidance and ends at 7:30pm.
