Preston Sleep Clinics and Sleep Study Information Guide Local Residents
Clinics across Preston now provide overnight studies and follow-up support for residents dealing with persistent sleep disruption.
How we reported this
Preston residents booked 420 overnight sleep studies in the first half of 2026, a 28 percent rise from the same period last year at two main local providers.
The increase follows repeated reports from Fulwood and Ashton neighbourhoods of daytime fatigue linked to irregular shift patterns and screen use before bed. Local GPs recorded 1,150 referrals for suspected sleep apnoea between January and May, prompting clinics to add evening slots and portable monitor options.
Clinic Locations and Available Studies
The Preston Sleep Assessment Unit on Fishergate offers full polysomnography tests every weekday night, with results reviewed within five working days. Patients arrive at 8 pm and leave by 7 am the next morning, wearing sensors that track breathing, heart rate and movement. The unit also runs a daytime multiple sleep latency test for those suspected of narcolepsy.
Further west on Ribbleton Lane, the Lancashire Wellness Sleep Centre provides at-home kits that record oxygen levels and chest movement for two consecutive nights. The centre charges £299 for the kit plus a 30-minute follow-up consultation, with appointments currently available from 20 July. Both sites accept referrals from any Preston GP practice and offer reduced rates for patients on Universal Credit.
Local Data and Next Steps
NHS Lancashire figures released last month showed that untreated sleep apnoea contributes to 14 percent of road traffic incidents involving drivers living inside the Preston postcode area. The same report noted average wait times for a hospital-based study now stand at 11 weeks, down from 17 weeks in 2025 after the two clinics increased capacity.
Anyone experiencing loud snoring, morning headaches or excessive tiredness should first contact their GP for a referral. Once referred, patients can choose between the Fishergate unit or the Ribbleton Lane centre based on travel convenience and preferred test format. Early booking is advised, as slots fill quickly each month.
