Roxburgh Park Council Facilities Launch Eight New Group Exercise Classes
From aqua aerobics to strength circuits, Roxburgh Park's council facilities offer more than most residents realise, here's how to find your way in.
How we reported this

Hume City Council's fitness programs at Roxburgh Park are running near-capacity this winter, with group exercise classes across the suburb's council-operated venues booking out within days of each new term opening. If you haven't looked lately, the timetable has expanded significantly since early 2025.
The timing matters. July is traditionally the month when cold weather drives people indoors and inactivity climbs. Community health workers consistently flag mid-winter as the period when the gap between intention and action widens fastest. Council-subsidised classes close that gap, they're cheaper than private studios, closer to home, and staffed by qualified instructors accountable to a public body rather than a franchise.
What's on and where
The Roxburgh Park Community Centre on Somerton Road is the most central entry point. It hosts a weekly program that currently includes Zumba on Tuesday mornings at 9:30am, a low-impact circuit class on Thursday evenings at 6:15pm, and a dedicated seniors' balance and mobility session every Wednesday at 10am under the Active Ageing Victoria framework. Parking is free, which removes one of the persistent small barriers that discourages people from showing up on cold mornings.
The Roxburgh Park Reserve precinct off Carleton Road hosts outdoor bootcamp sessions run through Council's Active Hume program on Saturday mornings, currently 7:30am starts, running through until late September. Instructors modify intensity on-site, so the sessions suit beginners alongside regulars who've been coming for years. Bring your own mat; the Council provides hand weights on request.
For aqua-based exercise, the closest council-affiliated facility is the Craigieburn Leisure Centre, roughly eight minutes north on Hume Highway. Its group aqua aerobics program runs six days a week, with a dedicated arthritis-friendly class on Monday and Friday mornings at 8am. The centre operates under a Hume City Council management arrangement, so Roxburgh Park residents qualify for the resident concession rate.
Costs, concessions, and how to book
Pricing is the standout advantage of council facilities. A casual group fitness class at most Hume-operated venues sits at $8.50 per session as of the 2026 fee schedule. A 10-session pass drops that to $7.20 per visit. Concession card holders, pension, health care card, and Veteran Gold Card, pay $5.60 casual. Under-16s attending with a parent or guardian are free at most outdoor sessions.
The Active Hume program also runs a low-income access scheme called the Get Active Voucher, administered through the Council's Community Wellbeing team at the Broadmeadows Civic Centre. Eligible residents can claim up to $100 toward class fees annually. Applications open each July 1, meaning right now is the window to lodge one for the second half of 2026. The Council's website lists the income thresholds, and the form can be completed online or in person.
Booking is straightforward but worth doing promptly. The Roxburgh Park Community Centre sessions fill fastest, the Thursday evening circuit regularly has a waitlist by mid-week. Online bookings go through the Hume City Council RecLink portal, or you can phone the centre directly on the Somerton Road number listed on the Council website. Walk-ins are accepted if space remains, but instructors request you arrive five minutes early to sign a waiver if you're new.
One practical note: most council classes are term-based, running in roughly 10-week blocks. The current winter term runs through to September 12. New participants can join mid-term at a pro-rata rate, so there's no need to wait for the next enrolment period. If you've been meaning to start since January, this Saturday's bootcamp at Carleton Road is as good an entry point as any.
