Workplace wellbeing: rights and local resources
Sunshine workers can now tap into specific legal protections and neighborhood programs to handle job stress without leaving the city.
How we reported this
Sunshine City Council rolled out expanded employee wellness access on July 1 this year, giving residents direct links to paid mental health leave options through local employers.
Stress levels at work have climbed in Sunshine since early 2025, when the local economy added 1,200 new service jobs. Many residents balance those shifts with family duties along Oak Street and the riverfront neighborhoods. The timing matters because the council tied the new access to existing state labor rules that already require employers to accommodate documented mental health needs.
Neighborhood programs in place
Two concrete options sit within walking distance for most residents. The Sunshine Wellness Hub at 245 Park Avenue runs free 45-minute stress-management sessions every Tuesday evening and has partnered with 18 local businesses to let staff attend during paid hours. A few blocks east, the Riverside Employee Resource Center on Maple Drive offers confidential intake for legal rights questions and connects callers to the city’s employee assistance network, which logged 340 visits in the first half of 2026.
A 2025 city health survey found that 47 percent of Sunshine workers reported moderate to high stress tied to job demands. That figure drove the council to allocate $92,000 for the current fiscal year to keep both sites staffed five days a week.
Next steps for residents
Anyone wanting to start can call the Riverside center at the number listed on the city website or drop by the Park Avenue hub during open hours. Employers must respond to a written request for accommodation within 10 business days under the current policy. Staff at both locations also hand out printed checklists that outline exactly what paperwork to submit for protected leave. The programs run through December and will be reviewed for renewal based on usage numbers collected at the end of the year.
