Werribee Residents Use Sleep Environment Checklist to Reduce Restless Nights
Werribee households are applying a room-by-room list of temperature, light and device rules to cut restless nights.
How we reported this
Residents along Synnot Street now run through a five-point sleep environment checklist before bed, starting with a thermometer reading that must sit between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius.
The push comes after Wyndham City Council recorded a 22 percent rise in sleep-related GP visits between January and June this year. Shift workers at the Werribee Mercy Hospital and families with children in local sports programs report the same pattern of late-night screen use followed by early alarms.
Local programs put checklist into practice
Two Werribee venues now run weekly sessions that walk participants through the checklist. The Wyndham Leisure Centre on Watton Street hosts a Thursday evening group where attendees measure bedroom light levels with phone apps and adjust blinds on the spot. Staff also direct people to the nearby Werribee Community Centre on Duncans Road for free blackout-curtain fittings supplied through a council bulk-buy scheme that costs households $65 per window.
Both sites keep printed copies of the checklist at reception. The list covers mattress firmness, pillow height, evening caffeine cut-off at 2pm, and removal of all chargers from the bedside table by 9pm.
Numbers behind the advice
A March 2026 Wyndham City resident survey of 1,200 households found that rooms kept under 19 degrees recorded 47 minutes more total sleep time on average than warmer bedrooms. The same report listed the median price of a basic white-noise machine at $48 at the Werribee Plaza electrical retailer.
People who want to test the checklist can pick up a free temperature and humidity card at either centre or download the Wyndham wellness app that logs nightly room conditions. Those who still struggle after two weeks are directed to book a 15-minute phone review with a local sleep health nurse through the council’s community services line.
