Williamstown Council Fitness Classes: Find Your Workout, Pricing, Schedule
Williamstown's council-operated fitness programs are fuller than ever, here's how to find your class, what it costs, and why now is the time to get off the couch.
How we reported this

Hobsons Bay City Council's group fitness timetable has expanded this winter, with more than 40 weekly classes now running across its two primary facilities, the Williamstown Swim and Fitness Centre on Civic Parade and the Altona Meadows Leisure Centre on Queen Street. Registrations for the July-September quarter opened on July 1, and several peak-hour slots were half-full within 48 hours.
The timing matters. After an exceptionally warm run of weather that left many residents skipping outdoor exercise, demand for indoor alternatives has surged. Community health workers at the Hobsons Bay Community Health service in Newport have been pointing clients toward council programs as a low-cost, socially structured way to restart a fitness habit without the pressure of a commercial gym. Group exercise, research consistently shows, has an accountability dimension that solo training lacks, and for residents who have let routines slide, a scheduled class with familiar faces is easier to return to than an open-ended gym floor.
What's on and where to find it
The Williamstown Swim and Fitness Centre on Civic Parade runs the widest variety. The July timetable includes BodyBalance on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 9:15 am, a Chair Yoga class on Tuesdays at 10:00 am specifically designed for over-65s, and a high-intensity Cycle 45 session on Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm that has been consistently waitlisted since May. The pool deck hosts Aqua Aerobics three mornings a week, and this quarter the centre added a Aqua Zumba session on Saturday at 8:00 am, a format that has built a loyal following at facilities in comparable coastal towns for the simple reason that it requires no coordination and is hard to take too seriously.
Over at the Altona Meadows Leisure Centre, the offering skews younger and faster. HIIT Circuit runs Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 pm, designed around 45-second work intervals with minimal equipment. There is also a dedicated Mums and Bubs Pilates mat class on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am, which accepts babies up to 12 months. Both venues operate under the Hobsons Bay Leisure Network banner, which means a single casual pass, priced at $14.50 for adults and $10.20 for concession holders, covers entry to any single group class at either site. A 10-class pack drops the per-visit rate to $11.80.
Those numbers are meaningful. Comparable privately operated group fitness studios in inner-west neighbourhoods typically charge between $22 and $28 per class. The council pricing reflects a deliberate subsidy embedded in Hobsons Bay's 2025-2029 Health and Wellbeing Plan, which commits the council to keeping community sport and fitness accessible to low-income households. Concession eligibility includes Healthcare Card holders, seniors card holders, and full-time students.
How to book and what to expect
Booking is online through the Hobsons Bay Leisure portal or in person at either centre's front desk. Walk-ins are permitted if a class is not full, but both venues recommend booking at least 24 hours ahead for evening classes. Cancellations must be made at least two hours before the start time to avoid losing the booking credit, a policy introduced in February after no-show rates for popular evening slots pushed waitlisted members out of classes they had been holding for a week.
First-timers should arrive ten minutes early. Instructors at both centres are briefed to do a brief pre-class check-in with new participants, flag any modifications for injuries, and place newcomers where they can see the instructor easily. This is not policy documentation, it is a reported practice from regular attendees who turned up nervous and left having booked the following week.
The July timetable is available in full at the Hobsons Bay City Council website and on the noticeboards inside both centres. The next quarterly timetable, covering October to December, is scheduled for release in mid-September. Anyone with questions about which class suits their fitness level or a specific health condition should speak directly with staff at the front desk, or consult their GP or a local allied health professional before signing up.
